Texas slipping in recruiting rankings

February, 2, 2011

Texas had a drama-free signing day. All 22 commitments have signed their letters of intent, and Mack Brown can breathe easily the rest of the day.

The class is highlighted by Malcolm Brown, the nation's No. 2 running back, No. 7 overall prospect and a longtime Texas commit.

Across the SEC, however, schools are collecting signatures from uncommitted prospects and moving up the ESPN recruiting rankings.

As a result, Texas has slid. The Longhorns had the No. 1 class for all of the 2011 recruiting season until last month when the Longhorns lost their top commit, offensive tackle Christian Westerman. The Arizona native switched his commitment to Auburn after the Longhorns' offensive line coach, Mac McWhorter, retired after the season.

Now, Auburn, Alabama and USC have all hopped over the Longhorns with signing day commitments and Texas' class now ranks No. 5, according to ESPN.

Oklahoma also ranks No. 7, which is where it began the day.

Here's where the Big 12 ranks as of right now:

5. Texas

7. Oklahoma

14. Nebraska

21. Oklahoma State

Texas Tech's class also ranks just outside the top 25, in the "On the Cusp" category.
