Late goal-line stand keeps SMU on top at half
UAB had three snaps from the SMU 1 at the end of the half, but two keepers by David Isabelle were stopped for no gain. Having exhausted all its timeouts, the Blazers were out of synch on their final play, a snap that went through the legs of Isabelle. The ball squirted back to the 10 and all UAB could do was fall on the ball as time expired.
SMU faced a 7-0 deficit after a sluggish first quarter, but running back Zach Line capped two long drives with short touchdown runs of 5 and 3 yards to put the Mustangs on top.
The first Mustang scoring drive covered 99 yards and chewed up over seven minutes of the clock. Twice, SMU benefited from 15-yard facemask fouls by Blazers tacklers.
Sophomore quarterback Kyle Padron’s passing accounted most of the big plays on the first drive, but he turned scrambler on a 64-yard march that put SMU in front. He had 47 yards on the drive and leads Mustang rushers at half with 58 yards.
UAB’s only score was set up by the only turnover so far, a fumble by H-back Patrick Fleming on a screen pass. Blazers’ defensive tackle D.J. Reese returned to the SMU 9, setting up Isabelle’s 4-yard scoring pass to Mike Jones.
