The No. 5 Texas Longhorns went into Saturday's opener with a game plan to run. The idea was to implement the mindset needed to be a physical, power rushing team as well as to ease the pressure on first-year starting quarterback Garrett Gilbert.

The tall sophomore completed 14-of-23 passes for 172 yards. He did not throw a touchdown pass, although two pass plays ended yards from the goal line. He also did not throw an interception.

So how did he stack up to his two predecessors in their starting debuts at Texas?

Colt McCoy vs. North Texas, 2006: 12-of-19 for 178 yards, three touchdowns.
Vince Young vs. Iowa State, 2003: 11-of-15 for 136 yards, one TD and one interception.
