Briles on Leach's exit, welcoming Tuberville
"You know," Briles said, "I mean, it's not hand grenades or horse shoes, so all I know is we didn't walk out of the stadium happy."
Briles could have bailed on Baylor to replace the fired Leach, but Briles committed to stay in Waco. He said Leach's departure might make things a bit more boring for the media who hyperventilate over Leach's odd or goofy soundbites, but that there won't be a lot of sentimentality with Leach no longer on the Tech sidelines for the first time in a decade.
"Quite honestly, it's not so much about facing a coach, really, it's about players vs. players and schemes vs. schemes and universities vs. universities," Briles said. 'I don't think any of that will change. I think we all have healthy relationships and rivalries with each of these universities in the Big 12 South in particular, and that's not going to change. It's always going to be fun, it's always going to be intense."
As for new Tech coach Tommy Tuberville, well, Briles said he just doesn't know the man.
"Apparently, he's done a heck of a job at Ole Miss and Auburn, so I'm sure my opinion of him is a lot higher than his of mine because he's done a lot more than I have. I've just been struggling around fighting to have another day. So, we don't want to pitch down resumes."
