No harm in MWC waiting on expansion
That's a smart decision. The deadline for Boise State to tell the WAC that it's leaving to join another conference in 2011-12 is July 1. A lot can happen in three weeks and it gives MWC commissioner Craig Thompson and other folks from the conference an opportunity to take a look at things and see if anything shakes out with the possible Pac-10 or Big-10 expansion.
If Texas and the five other teams discussed leave the Big 12 for the Pac-10, the MWC could decide to scoop up some of the remaining teams, like Kansas State and Kansas. If they don't do anything, the MWC could still extend Boise State an invitation or they could simply stick with the teams they have and continue on a progression to gain an automatic bid to the BCS.
The bottom line: Boise State would make the league stronger. But there are a lot of other things that could happen that may make inviting other teams or no teams the better move. And the league doesn't need Boise State to get into the BCS.
I'm still in favor of the MWC adding Boise State because it strengthens the conference. But the league doesn't have to make that call now. Let's wait and see how things look in a few weeks.
