NEW ORLEANS -- Sam Houston State forward Gilberto Clavell consistently found a seam in Baylor's 2-3 zone defense and killed the Bears with 6- to 8-foot jumpers in the lane and lunging dunks. He singlehandedly pushed the cold-shooting Bearkats to a 31-30 halftime lead with 17 points and hitting seven of SHSU's 12 field goals.

There are two ways to look at the first 20 minutes from a Baylor perspective. One, LaceDarius Dunn and Tweety Carter combined for more fouls (four) than points (three), so you have to figure those guys start to heat up in the second half. On the flip side, Baylor held SHSU to 31.6 percent shooting, which included 2-of-16 from beyond the 3-point arc. The Bearkats have to like their chances of burying more of those shots over the Baylor zone.

The Bearkats shot the long ball at a 37.8-percent clip on the season and averaged 8.9 a game.

Ekpe Udoh had a nice half for the Bears with 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocks. But, he's having trouble with Clavett slipping into the lane and picked up two fouls trying to keep him away from the basket.
