SMU to have say in NCAA tourney selection

February, 17, 2010
See, sensational headlines do work, you're reading this post. No, Matt Doherty's SMU Mustangs are not on the verge of snapping the program's 17-year NCAA Tournament drought, but SMU athletic director Steve Orsini will have a say on who's in and who's out -- next season.

Orsini has been appointed to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee effective Sept. 1.

As for those Ponies (11-13, 4-6 Conference USA), they try to stop a two-game skid at Moody Coliseum at 7 tonight against a woeful Rice outfit (8-16, 1-9). The Mustangs have six games left before the C-USA tournament. They need four more wins to give Doherty -- now in his fourth season -- his most victories since posting 14 in his first season. The opportunity also remains for a first winning season since 2002-03.

With games at Memphis, at Tulsa and at home against Marshall still ahead (those three teams have combined records of 55-20 and 22-8), this one is a must win.
