If Matt Doherty's SMU Mustangs (10-11, 3-4) are going to make a late-season push and surpass the 14 wins of Doherty's first season, they have to win games like today's Conference USA 2 p.m. tip at Tulane (7-14, 2-6).

SMU couldn't maintain momentum from last Saturday's "signature win" over Memphis at Moody Coliseum, failing to complete a comeback at Southern Miss on Tuesday. The loss snapped SMU's four-game winning streak, which had matched the longest in Doherty's tenure. Now in his fourth season, Doherty is searching for his first wininng season and the program's first since 2002-03.

In four seasons of C-USA matchups, SMU has never won at Tulane. Today would be a good time to reverse that trend and prevent a fifth time this season of at least two consecutive losses. Because next up for the Mustangs is conference co-leader UTEP (16-5, 7-1) at Moody on Wednesday.
