DeRuyter new A&M defensive coordinator

January, 21, 2010
Texas A&M announced Thursday that Tim DeRuyter from Air Force is the new defensive coordinator and assistant head coach for the Aggie football team.

“I am very excited to announce that we have hired Tim DeRuyter as the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach for the Aggies,” Sherman said in a release. “After an extensive process, it became very apparent that Tim is the right fit for Texas A&M. He would not leave the Air Force Academy except for a special place. He has a great appreciation for the history, the traditions and the values of Texas A&M.”

Sherman said he liked DeRuyter's attacking style of defense.

DeRuyter was defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Air Force for three years. In 2009, Air Force finished 11th in the NCAA in total defense, allowing 288.31 yards per game. The pass defense was fifth in the nation, intercepting 20 passes. Air Force allowed 14.62 first downs per game, fourth best in the NCAA.

“My family and I are excited about the move to Texas A&M,” DeRuyter said in a release. “Of course, we have mixed emotions since I am a graduate and we have spent so much time in a special place like the Air Force Academy and Colorado Springs.

“This is a great opportunity for me,” DeRuyter explained. “I tried hard to find a chink in the armor in something related to Texas A&M or Coach Sherman, but I could not find it. The football program and coaches, the academics, the community and everything is first class and we are excited to join Coach Sherman’s staff."
