Patterson: Game decided in red zone
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- TCU coach Gary Patterson believes how each team handles the other inside the opponent's 20-yard line will decide tonight's Fiesta Bowl.
"Like last year, I still think it comes down to the red zone," said Patterson, whose team beat Boise State, 17-16, in the Poinsettia Bowl last season. "We were fortunate enough to be able to make them kick three field goals and we were able to score a couple of touchdowns. It is one of those situations were you got to get ready to play."
Patterson noted that "anything can happen" when you have a month to prepare. Boise State and TCU are tied in red zone offense (35th in the nation) in terms of percentage of scores (field goals or touchdowns) out of drives inside the 20. Boise State has scored 47 touchdowns in 74 drives in the red zone. TCU has 38 TDs in 59 drives. That will be interesting to watch tonight. It's the part of the game where Andy Dalton and Kellen Moore will have a huge impact as they run the offense down there.
