Twenty-five years later, June Jones' SMU Mustangs are off to a fast start at the Hawaii Bowl, leading 17-0 at the end of the first quarter. They scored touchdowns on their first two possessions and a field goal on the third after SMU drove to the Nevada 4-yard line, settling for a field goal from former Texas A&M kicker Matt Szymanksi.

Nevada, playing without its two star tailbacks, was limited to 35 total yards in the first quarter, 25 on the ground. The Ponies raced to 192 yards, 182 through the air.

Jones, in his second season at SMU after nine leading Hawaii, was actually at the Mustangs' last bowl game in 1984. It was the Aloha Bowl back then and he was leaving Hawaii as an assistant to join the Houston Gamblers of the USFL. Jones returned to the island to gather his remaining things and stopped by the game, a 27-20 SMU victory over Notre Dame.

"A lot of players in there I ended up coaching in the pros which kind of surprised me," Jones said last week.

SMU junior transfer running back Shawnbrey McNeal, who said this week that he will test the NFL Draft waters this spring, scored both of SMU's touchdowns. The first came on a 9-yard run set up by a beautiful, 71-yard bomb down the middle of the field from true freshman quarterback Kyle Padron to receiver Cole Beasley.
