CLEVELAND -- Breakfast of champions?
"Twelve pieces of bacon and a Red Bull,'' manager Terry Francona said Thursday morning. "Let's go.''
Thus fortified, the Red Sox take on the Cleveland Indians at 12:05 Thursday, hoping to break a seaspon-opening five-game losing streak behind ace Jon Lester, who was cuffed around for five runs and six hits by Texas in the season opener but was not involved in the decision in a 9-5 loss.
"I can see us starting with Lester, let the big boy get on a roll and put us on his shoulders," Francona had said the night before, when the Sox fell to the Indians 8-4, a horrific sixth inning in which Dennys Reyes loaded the bases on two hit batters and a walk setting up a four-run Indians rally climaxed by Asdrubal Cabrera's three-run home run off Dan Wheeler.
The Sox come into the game 7 for 40 with runners in scoring position, including 1 for 10 Wednesday night, when they failed to cash in on a second-and-third, no-out threat in the third and a first-and-third, one-out rally in the fifth.
A couple of positive signs: Adrian Gonzalez hit his first home run in a Sox uniform and also doubled, while Carl Crawford had two infield hits, a walk and stole his first two bases of the season.
Here is today’s lineup:
1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
2. Carl Crawford, LF
3. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
4. Adrian Gonzalez, 1B

6. David Ortiz, DH
