Gonzalez seeking a Teixeira-like deal?

The Red Sox famously missed out on Mark Teixeira last offseason, and we learn today that it might take a Teixeira-type deal to lock up Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez (a rumored Red Sox target) if he gets dealt this summer.

Though the Padres hold a more-than-reasonable $5.5 million option on Gonzalez next season, it is considered likely that they will deal the All-Star before the July 31 trade deadline simply because they can’t afford to keep him beyond next season.

Should Gonzalez land in Boston, it will come at a hefty price in prospects and the Red Sox will likely want to sign Gonzalez to a long-term deal.

What price should they expect to pay?

Gonzalez’s agent, John Boggs, told the San Diego Union-Tribune that Padres general manager -- and former Theo Epstein lieutenant -- Jed Hoyer inquired what it would take to sign Gonzalez to an extension, and Boggs cited the eight-year, $180 million deal Teixeira signed with the Yankees last offseason. Not surprisingly, that comment ended extension talks before they even started.

“While I’d be thrilled to have [Gonzalez be] part of the organization for the long term, the early signals indicate his cost will be greater than our ability to pay,” Padres CEO Jeff Moorad told the Tribune earlier this month.

Would the Red Sox pay that price, if that indeed is what it would take? They wouldn’t go that high for Teixeira, but would they consider doing so for the 27-year-old Gonzalez, who last season hit 40 homers, drove in 99 runs and won the Gold Glove at first base for a second straight season?
