When the Red Sox acquired utilityman Eric Patterson in a trade Saturday, it was a quick reaction to the injury second baseman Dustin Pedroia sustained the night before in San Francisco.

It turns out this isn't the first time that Patterson and Pedroia have shared a strong link.

The two were teammates on the United States collegiate national team in 2002 and 2003, before they broke into the big leagues. Patterson reflected on that tie-in with Pedroia, and his new home in Boston, prior to Tuesday's win over the Tampa Bay Rays in a story now posted on ESPNBoston.com.
