SAN FRANCISCO -- Outfielder J.D. Drew is expected to play Saturday afternoon, his first start since straining his right hamstring while catching Manny Ramirez's line drive a week ago Friday night in Fenway Park. That was the word from manager Terry Francona before the game.

Why then wasn't Drew batting for right-handed hitting Darnell McDonald against Giants closer Brian Wilson with two outs in the ninth inning, the Sox trailing 5-4, one run in, and the bases loaded?

"We couldn't,'' Francona said. "With the weather [it was cool and foggy], he said he would hit but couldn't go to the outfield. We were literally hamstrung. There was nothing to do.''

McDonald grounded to short to end the game. Drew was in the on-deck circle, preparing to pinch hit for pitcher Ramon Ramirez.

Would Drew play Saturday?

"I'm hoping,'' Francona said. "I'm hoping with the weather here in the afternoon. Again if he's not supposed to play, we won't. But that would be really helpful.''
