BOSTON -- With Victor Martinez having been behind the plate past midnight last night, Terry Francona has Jason Varitek catching in Sunday’s matinee. He wanted Martinez’s bat in the lineup, however, so Martinez will DH, with David Ortiz sitting.

“[Ortiz] is probably not too happy with me today,’’ Francona said. “I thought he swung the bat a little better last night, especially in the second game.’’

Hitting in the fifth spot instead of Ortiz is J.D. Drew, who has only a single in his last 19 at-bats and is batting just .139 overall. Drew is not a great candidate to break out of it Sunday against Matt Garza. He’s batting .158 (3-for-19) lifetime against Garza, although that includes a home run.

The Sox are hitless in their last 22 at-bats with runners in scoring position, although they had a three-homer game Saturday night, their second multi-homer game of the season. Marco Scutaro (solo shot) and Kevin Youkilis and Dustin Pedroia (two-run homers) all went deep Saturday; the Sox hit five home runs in last Sunday’s 8-3 win over the Royals.

The Sox have lost all four games in which they’ve scored three runs or fewer this season, and in Garza they’re facing a pitcher who has allowed only one earned run in each of his first two starts, both of which came against the Orioles.

The Rays, who were 17 games below .500 (32-49) on the road last season, have won their first five games on the road this season, sweeping a three-game set from the Orioles in Baltimore before winning the first two here. A win in either of the last two games here, and the Rays will have won consecutive series on the road as many times as they did all of last year.

Jon Lester will be pitching for the Red Sox and looking for his first win of 2010, having gone 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA in his first two starts. He went just five innings in each of those starts, the first time he has had back-to-back starts of five innings or less.

Francona said he wasn’t sure whether Jonathan Papelbon would be available Sunday. He said he was still with his wife, Ashley, who gave birth to the couple’s second child, a son, Gunner Robert, on Saturday.
