Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine was a guest on ESPN New York Radio's Michael Kay show on Friday afternoon (listen to the podcast HERE), and was asked to respond to an ESPNBoston.com report that he and his staff have had a number of breakdowns in communication.

Specifically, he was asked whether he had a problem with members of his coaching staff.

"I'd rather not comment on things that are written," Valentine said. "All I can say is that the coaching staff is a work in progress, obviously. As is the team. ... this is a new year, different guys. I'd be surprised if every guy in the clubhouse right now has already bought their Christmas present for me and I'd be surprised if they think I'm some kind of miracle worker, that I can just get a whole bunch of new guys who are coaches and have them all be directly on the same page. It's a work in progress."

Kay then asked Valentine whether he thought it was fair to hire a manager without letting him bring in his own coaches. When Valentine was hired, pitching coach Bob McClure had already been hired and Tim Bogar and Gary Tuck were held over from Terry Francona's staff.

"It is what it is. People are people," Valentine said. "Many of the guys who were inherited, if you will ... are as happy as can be. And a couple of guys are still feeling their way along."
