Following Tuesday night's game, the Red Sox optioned reliever Clayton Mortensen to Pawtucket. They're expected to promote righty Justin Germano before Wednesday's series finale at Oakland.

Mortensen threw 71 pitches in five innings of relief after Daisuke Matsuzaka was pulled in the second inning of Monday's 6-1 loss, so he probably wouldn't be available for the next few days anyway.

Germano, who is 9-4 with a 2.40 ERA in 17 games (16 starts) with Pawtucket, had an opt-out clause in his contract that kicked in July 1, so the Sox had to promote him within a 48-hour window or risk having him seek employment elsewhere.

Germano has worked a total of 105 innings for the PawSox and has posted 72 strikeouts and only 13 walks. Germano recently was named a Triple-A all-star.

Mortensen has allowed three runs in 20 innings with Boston, striking out 15 and walking just two.
