David Ortiz was elected as the starting designated hitter for the American League All-Star team.

It is the eighth All-Star selection for Ortiz, who is hitting .305 with 21 home runs and 53 RBIs.

Ortiz is the lone Red Sox representative on the team, marking the first time since 2001 that the Sox have had only one All-Star (Manny Ramirez).

Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia was a possibility, but was left off the roster in favor of the Twins' Joe Mauer and Baltimore's Matt Wieters. Mike Napoli was voted as the starting catcher.

Saltalamacchia is batting .254 with 15 home runs, 37 RBIs and an .838 OPS, while Mauer is batting .325 with 4 homers, 36 RBIs and an .865 OPS and Wieters' numbers are .249, 11 HRs, 38 RBIs and .771 OPS. Napoli, one of three Rangers voted as starters, is batting .238 with 12 home runs, 30 RBIs and a .782 OPS.

Also left out was White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski (.285, 14 HRs, 45 RBIs, .849 OPS).
