BOSTON -- Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said he doesn’t pay too much attention to the All-Star voting, but believes that a few of his players deserve to participate in the upcoming All-Star game festivities July 9-11 in Kansas City.

Currently, Red Sox slugger David Ortiz leads in the majors in the designated hitter category and catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia isn’t too far behind in his category.

Ortiz enters Wednesday’s matinee game against the Toronto Blue Jays with a .307 BA, 20 homers and 52 RBIs. Saltalamacchia is hitting .254 with 14 homers and 35 RBIs.

"I think [Salty] should be an All-Star,” Valentine said. “He probably will.”

Valentine said he also might lobby for reliever Scott Atchison. The right-hander has a 2-0 record with a 1.33 ERA in a league-leading 40 2/3 innings of work for a reliever.

“I wouldn’t hesitate,” Valentine said. “Or for Salty or [closer Alfredo] Aceves. Anybody that is worthy of recognition. If it means that my lobbying would help, I would do it.”

In typical Bobby V fashion, however, he said he believes a player should be evaluated as an All-Star for a full season of work.

“The All-Star team that is selected at the end of the year is the one you really want to be on,” he said. “It’s a great honor to do the mid-season one also because it counts more anyways, I guess. You’re an All-Star for half of the year or you’re an All-Star for a full year.”
