FORT MYERS, Fla. -- So I'm flying a little blind here. I don't know how many of you are acing the course, flunking out or dropping out. But here goes with Round 3 of our get-ready-for-the-season baseball quiz, using as our textbook the terrific Baseball Field Guide by Dan Formosa and Paul Hamburger.
Wednesday, a true-false test.
1. True or false?: The pitcher's rubber, or pitcher's plate, is 60 feet 6 inches from the front of home plate.
2. True or false?: The foul lines extend through the batter's box, even though the white chalk lines are not drawn there. If a hit ball bounces within the batter's box, but inside the imaginary foul lines, it will be a fair ball.
3. True or false?: The third-base coach is permitted to grab a runner to keep him from attempting to score on a play.
4. True or false?: A designated hitter may take a fielding position during the game, replacing another fielder, but the pitcher must then bat in the replaced fielder's position in the batting order.
5. True or false?: A runner attempting to tag up on a fly ball is not permitted to do so until after the fielder has made the catch.
