A few nuggets from Bobby Valentine's comments about Kevin Youkilis today:

-- Valentine on the question he answered on WHDH about Youkilis:

"I sort of explained his swing is not what he wants it to be. The physical part of his swing is frustrating him. Frustration leads to emotion. I hadn’t seem him break as many helmets as I’ve seen him break on TV. Just seemed different.

"At the end of the thing I don’t know what the reason is because I haven’t been here long enough. I don’t know why his swing isn’t exactly where he wants it to be and why he isn’t throwing as many helmets. I thought it was rather innocuous Seems like they were trying to bang him and I think I started by saying how good his at-bats were that day (Saturday), his two walks."

-- Valentine said he apologized for his comments that appeared to call into question Youkilis' commitment to the game:

"When Kevin came in this morning, I thought it was about his groin. I thought he was going to tell me how his groin was because it was sore after the game yesterday. He said, 'How are you doing? How's the groin?' He said, 'Well, it's all right, but what's going on?' When he told me that people called him and said I said things that he didn't like, I totally apologized.

"I said, 'Jesus, the last thing in the world I want you to think I'm doing is that I'm criticizing you. I was just mentioning, just giving an answer to a question. I should have been more specific and said, 'Your physical is about your swing, and your emotional is about your not being happy when you don't hit a ball off the wall.' I don't know if he accepted my apology. It was very sincere. The last thing in the world I would want him to think is that this was anything but an answer to a question that seemed like the question was jabbing at him. I was just trying to smooth it over. I guess I didn't."

-- Valentine said the reason why Youkilis was not in the lineup was because of his groin.

"The training room thought that maybe if it was a night game he might be able to, and then Kevin said later in the game, if I need him to pinch-hit, he's available."

Gordon Edes will have more in a bit ...
