FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Good morning from the Fort, where the early talk in camp is Jason Varitek's retirement. The captain, six weeks ahead of his 40th birthday, plans to announce his retirement Thursday.

@JerryRemysGrill just tweeted a videotape Tuesday morning showing some folks touring the Sox clubhouse on truck day in Boston, and Varitek's locker had already been given to Kelly Shoppach. The link is here.

I think it’s 50-50 he takes the job the organization has offered; newly married, Varitek may elect to take some time off before he plunges back into the work world, much like Mike Lowell, who took a year off before taking a job with MLB Network. But that’s strictly a guess.

ESPNBoston’s Joe McDonald will have reaction to Varitek’s retirement later, so check back.

What a run this weekend for Sox owner John W. Henry and the Fenway Sports Group. On Sunday, he and Tom Werner watched in Wembley Stadium as his Liverpool soccer team defeated Cardiff on penalty kicks to win the Carling Cup, Liverpool’s first trophy win in six years. And Monday night, Matt Kenseth of the Roush Fenway Racing Group won the Daytona 500.

The Sox can only hope that in 2012, success will beget success.
