FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The first official day of spring training for Boston Red Sox pitchers and catchers is over.

It was a busy day at the team’s new player development complex. Some pitchers tossed bullpen sessions, including Josh Beckett, Andrew Miller, Vincente Padilla, Mark Melancon and Junichi Tazawa.

Here are some musings from Day 1:

* Even though Sunday was the first official reporting date for Red Sox pitchers and catchers, it’s been obvious that new manager Bobby Valentine and new pitching coach Bob McClure are spending what seems like countless hours working with the pitching staff.

Both Jon Lester and Josh Beckett spoke about the transition to a new coaching staff. Lester believes his relationship with the club’s manager, no matter who it is, would not be an issue.

“I don’t think so, for me,” Lester said. “Pitchers really don’t deal with the manager a whole lot. We come in the clubhouse, we see him and say, ‘Hey’ but that’s really it. As far as the communication, it’s usually on bunt plays and when he comes to take the ball from me.”

McClure came on board shortly after the Red Sox hired Valentine. He’s been working closely with the pitchers this week and the transition seems to be flawless so far.

“I think Bob’s done a great job,” Lester said. “After he was hired he got in touch with everybody and has had good conversations and built a good foundation before we got down here.”

What about Valentine?

“Hopefully it’s not a big transition,” Lester said. “It seems like he’s slid in real nice.”

* Fans were allowed into the new facility for the first time. It seemed like there weren’t many fans in attendance because the facility is so big and spread out, but a few hundred spectators took in the workouts. The Red Sox will hold tours of JetBlue Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday. Cost is $5 per person.

* A funny moment occurred earlier in the day when Bobby Valentine talked about preparing a lineup to play against Boston University. Well, the Terriers do not have a baseball program, and the new Boston resident was quickly corrected. The Red Sox, of course, will play their annual doubleheader against Boston College and Northeastern on March 3. “We’ll beat them both,” Valentine said with a laugh.
