Valentine, Crawford talk over the phone

It looks like Bobby Valentine and Carl Crawford finally had their first conversation.

Valentine told reporters Saturday morning that he spoke with Crawford over the phone earlier this week, with the player’s agent and Sox general manager Ben Cherington on the line as well.

“Carl sounded great,” Valentine said, according to the Providence Journal. “He seemed very determined, he seemed very understanding of the fact that things got spinning a little fast for him last year in a new environment and he seemed to be determined to correct that.”

Valentine was critical of Crawford while an analyst with ESPN and there has been speculation that perhaps Crawford, who struggled in his first season in Boston, was avoiding his new boss.

Valentine had been trying to connect with Crawford since the winter meetings in December.
