Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine was on hand for the Celtics' home opener Friday night versus the Detroit Pistons.

Valentine got called out of the crowd to hold the ball for the trademark flip slam of Celtics mascot Lucky the Leprechaun, before the start of the fourth quarter. Lucky missed the slam and Valentine playfully chided him before returning to his baseline seat. Looks like Lucky won't be getting a shot in right field this spring.

He appeared on TV in an interview with Comcast SportsNet during the first half.

If mugging for the cameras is any indication of strong leadership, the Sox should be in good hands in 2012.

He certainly seemed to help the Celtics, who knocked off Detroit 96-85 for their first win of the season, as ailing captain Paul Pierce made his debut.
