The Boston Red Sox have had "increased dialogue" with right-handed closer Francisco Cordero this week, according to a tweet from ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.

The Reds have shown interest in bringing him back to Cincinnati, and clubs such as the Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers could see value in the veteran as an alternative to trading for Andrew Bailey or handing Ryan Madson a three-year or four-year deal worth more than $10 million per.

The 36-year-old Cordero had 36 saves in 42 chances and a 2.45 ERA last season.

The Red Sox have been linked to both Bailey and Madson. Daniel Bard is Boston's No. 1 internal option to close, but he's also a candidate to start next season and will be stretched out as such during spring training. The team also recently traded for Astros closer Mark Melancon.
