FORT MYERS, Fla. -- One of the big stories here at spring training is which pitcher will get the ball on Opening Day.

Colleague Gordon Edes nicely detailed why it would be a surprise if it’s not Josh Beckett, although manager Terry Francona has remained coy.

The topic came up again this morning when Francona was asked about how many players the team will take for its exhibition game at Washington April 3. That game comes the day before the season opener, and the Red Sox aren’t planning on using any of their top relievers.

Francona said all of the team’s pitchers will make the trip, before adding, “even Beckett.”

That caught the attention of reporters, who playfully pointed out to Francona that it sounded as if he’d just tipped off his plans to start Beckett on Opening Day.

Francona laughed and said he had no official announcement.
