ESPNBoston.com Red Sox beat writer Gordon Edes checks in from Tampa Bay to chat with ESPN Boston Radio's Adam Jones in advance of tonight's Red Sox-Rays series opener at the Trop (LISTEN TO THE INTERVIEW HERE). Among the topics discussed:

* The Red Sox have lost 5 of 7 and are just 6 1/2 games up on the Rays in the wild card race. Considering the Sox and Rays face each other seven times before the end of the season, should we start to worry about this? Edes doesn't think so: "For them to catch the Sox would take a monumental collapse by Boston."

* The season might be lost for Carl Crawford, but his first year in Boston can still be considered a success if he puts together three good weeks in October. "You just hope he has some big games in him for the Yankees or the Rangers or the Tigers."

* Tim Wakefield's seven-game winless streak between win Nos. 199 and 200 has not only been brutal to watch, but it probably means he won't become Boston's all-time winningest pitcher. He currently has 185 wins in a Red Sox uniform, seven behind Roger Clemens and Cy Young atop the team's all-time list. "I think Wake blew his chance at the 192 by having this long winless streak ... you really question whether the Sox bring him back next year."

* Edes thinks there's plenty of reason for concern about Josh Beckett's ankle sprain, the extent of which is still not known. "You absolutely need a healthy Beckett heading into this postseason or it's going to be a short one."

* On the other hand, Edes was encouraged by recent news on Clay Buchholz's progress. "There is enough time, in my opinion, if he can get back up on the hill in the next few days, that he will be of some use to the Sox in October. Whether there''s enough time for him to build back up to starting, that's a question. But if nothing else, maybe you have him coming out of the pen instead of Matt Albers, which would be a big upgrade."
