BOSTON -- Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz was scratched from the starting lineup for Tuesday’s afternoon game against the Rays because of “illness,” according to the team.

As a result, manager Terry Francona did a little roster manipulation, moving Carl Crawford up from sixth into Ortiz’s fifth spot in the batting order. Jarrod Saltalamacchia moved up to sixth, Josh Reddick to seventh and Jed Lowrie was thrust into the lineup as the DH, batting eighth. Shortstop Mike Aviles remained at the bottom of the order.
