Red Sox manager Terry Francona did not have any definitive injury updates on either Jon Lester (lat strain) or Clay Buchholz (back), but did confirm that Lester would miss his Sunday start and would not pitch until after the All-Star break.
“He won’t pitch Sunday. I think that’s a foregone conclusion,” Francona said in his weekly interview on Boston sports radio station WEEI Wednesday afternoon. "I think the next decision is whether we DL him. We were probably going to have him come out last anyway out the [All-Star] break just because we wanted to build in a break for him. If we’re going to have him miss 10, 11, 12 days, another three might not be [a bad idea].”
Francona said Lester was undergoing an MRI at 2:30 p.m.
“Hopefully we will know a little bit more before the game,” Francona said. “He’s sore today. He’s not terrible, which is good. We’ll see. We’ll probably make decision before the game. We were thinking about backing him up anyway to give him some rest. If it’s anywhere close we’ll certainly err on the side of caution.”
Buchholz, who has been on the disabled list since June 17 with a back injury, was seen by back specialist Craig Brigham in North Carolina this morning. The team did not yet have an update from the exam.
“Buch is actually back already, he just walked by, but we don’t have anything yet,” Francona said. “I’m sure the doctors, the medical people will confer, hopefully pretty soon.”
In other news, Francona said Adrian Gonzalez had a bit of a stiff neck and would get Wednesday night’s game off.
