The Red Sox on Monday activated right-handed pitcher Junichi Tazawa from the 60-day disabled list and optioned him to Double-A Portland. To make room on the 40-man roster, the club moved pitcher Rich Hill to the 60-day disabled list.

Tazawa, 25, began the 2011 season on the 60-day disabled list while recovering from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on April 6, 2010. He missed the entire 2010 campaign. He is slated to start for the Sea Dogs at home Monday against New Britain. The game will be carried live on NESN.

Tazawa, who was signed as an international free agent on December 3, 2008, made his Major League debut with Boston in 2009, his first professional season. In six appearances, including four starts, with the Red Sox that year, he went 2-3 with a 7.46 ERA (21 ER/25.1 IP). He went 9-7 with a 2.55 ERA (31 ER/109.1 IP) in 20 starts between Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket in 2009.
