The Red Sox traded catcher Mike McKenry to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations, the team announced.

McKenry, 26, had been acquired by Boston from Colorado on March 29. With Triple-A Pawtucket this season, he hit .274 (26-for-95) with 5 doubles, 3 home runs, 12 RBIs, 10 runs and 14 walks in 29 games, all at catcher.

The right-handed hitter spent the 2010 season with Colorado’s Triple-A Colorado Springs club before making his major league debut in September, appearing in six games with the Rockies and making one start behind the plate.

The deal opens a spot on Boston's 40-man roster.
