Baseball America’s John Manuel joined ESPN Boston Radio today to talk about the Red Sox draft. Click here to listen to the podcast.

Among the highlights:

Overall thoughts on Boston’s draft – Manuel said that as expected, the Red Sox took a lot of high-ceiling players and the biggest question will be if they can sign them all. The Sox took eight players out of Baseball America’s top 200.

Toughest signs – He mentioned OF Senquez Golson in the eighth round (he has a football scholarship to University of Mississippi), and C Jordan Weems in the third round. He said he thought the Sox would be able to sign C Blake Swihart, who the picked in the first round. Swihart is committed to the University of Texas and has told teams he plans to go to college.

Thought on top pick Matt Barnes – Said it was a great value to get Barnes, a pitcher from UConn, at No. 19. Said he compares very favorably to Anthony Renaudo, who the Sox drafted last year. This draft was much deeper in terms of pitching and that pushed Barnes down to where the Sox could get him.
