BOSTON -- Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who had never struck out more than twice in a game before striking out four times in six at-bats in Wednesday's 5-3, 13-inning loss, was not in the lineup Thursday afternoon, the first time he has not started a game in 2011.

Pedroia is just 6 for 50 in his last dozen games, a .120 average.

Marco Scutaro is on the lineup card to play second base and bat eighth. Carl Crawford is batting second, after hitting in the No. hole for 9 of the last 10 games, a period in which he batted .300 (12 for 40), though his overall average remains at .193.

Pedroia had whiffed as many as two times just 22 times in his career, four times last season.

Francona, who a couple of days earlier said he'd recently approached Pedroia about taking a day off and had the player threaten "to kill" him if he took him out of the lineup, said he informed Pedroia that he would not be playing Thursday late in Wednesday night's game.

"He's OK,'' Francona said. "He needs it. We only want to give Pedey days off when he needs it, because he's such a good player even when he's not swinging the bat like he can, but he needs it. It will be good for him.

"He plays so hard, and plays so all out, so after a night like last night and the quick turnaround, it will be good for him.''

J.D. Drew, who had been benched the day before and then was not available to pinch hit, Francona said, because of a bout of vertigo, was back in the lineup Thursday.

The Minnesota Twins, who have a day off Thursday before playing the Red Sox in a series beginning Friday, checked into their hotel before the Angels returned to the same hotel in the predawn hours.

Here is the lineup:

1. Jacoby Ellsbury, cf
2. Carl Crawford, lf
3. Kevin Youkilis, 3b
4. Adrian Gonzalez, 1b
5. David Ortiz, DH
6. Jed Lowrie, ss
7. J.D. Drew, rf
8. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, c
9. Marco Scutaro, 2b
SP -- John Lackey, rhp
